Are you interested in becoming Catholic? Whether you wish to convert to the Catholic faith or want to receive the rest of your sacraments, the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) at St. John’s is for you. We would love to have you become a member of our parish family!
WHAT IS RCIA?
The Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) is the universal process by which adults become full-fledged members of the Catholic Church. RCIA members may be those wishing to convert to the Catholic faith seeking Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation (Catechumens). Or, baptized Catholics seeking Eucharist and/or Confirmation (Candidates). RCIA is open to anyone over 14 years of age.
Throughout the RCIA process, catechumens and candidates learn about the Catholic faith and examine the roots or out Christian history preparing to join the community of believers. Members of RCIA receive the Sacraments of Baptism, Communion and/or Confirmation during the Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday, the night before Easter Sunday. At this time, catechumens and candidates are fully received into the Catholic Church.
What is the RCIA process?
Phase 1 – Inquiry
A time of getting acquainted and having questions answered.
Phase 2 – Catechumenate
The instructional period where the basics of the faith are presented, with a particular focus on the life of Jesus and His teachings, the Church and the Sacraments.
Phase 3 – Purification and Enlightenment
A spiritual, prayerful time of preparation during Lent where the catechumen and candidates prepare for their full reception into the Church.
Phase 4 – Mystagogy
The last phase of RCIA which means “entering more deeply into the mystery”
When and Where of RCIA Meetings?
St John’s RCIA meets on Tuesday evening at 7:00 PM in the Msgr. Mahoney building, between the Chapel and the School. Meetings begin in September but inquiry meetings are ongoing.
